BREAKING: Burundi’s President Pierre Nkurunziza Dies Of ‘Heart Attack’ At 55
Burundi’s President Pierre Nkurunziza, aged 55, has died after suffering a cardiac arrest, the government says.
In a statement posted on Twitter on Tuesday, the government announced “with great sorrow to Burundians and the international community” the passing of Nkurunziza, 55.
The outgoing president died at Karusi hospital after suffering a heart attack on June 8, the statement added.
A government statement had said that he was admitted to hospital on Saturday after feeling unwell.
His condition then improved but on Monday he had a cardiac arrest and efforts to revive him were unsuccessful.
Mr Nkurunziza was due to step down from the presidency in August after 15 years in power.
